This past weekend, the B-HUGs community gathered for a truly heartwarming Showcase @FUTURES Festival – an afternoon filled with reflection, laughter and powerful intergenerational conversations open to the 2025 B-HUGs Elective cohort and their families and friends. What made the day so special was the beautiful blend of ages and experiences in one room, connected by our shared realities of being from Black backgrounds and being in the UK.

Arriving at the Phoenix entrance

Students at the Heart of It All

The event took place in Studio 74 at the Exeter Phoenix and began with screenings of student-made video projects from last term’s elective. From sharp-witted comedy skits to thoughtful explorations of identity and culture, the room was soon erupting with laughter and admiration. There was no doubt – we may have some future filmmakers and directors in our B-HUGs family.

Staying true to the ethos of “for students, by students,” the young people led every aspect of the day. They welcomed guests, set up the decor, MC’d the event, oversaw the running order, and even captured photos and videos. Their teamwork, confidence and professionalism were outstanding – a testament to their maturity and leadership.

All of this was made possible with the support of B-HUGs staff and the dedicated staff from our partner schools, who stood proudly beside them.

Panel discussion and Audience Q&A

A Powerful Film Moment: Mama Balo

We were honoured to have an exclusive screening of Mama Balo, a short film by Yahaya Hassan Taiwo, introduced by Jegna Tomi Adesina. The film explored intergenerational relationships; their founding and resilience in the face of struggles, told through the story of an inspirational Nigerian woman who is a cleaner at a university student hostel and an icon. It was a quiet but powerful reminder of the sacrifices and legacy of those who came before us and the power of every day acts.

Wisdom Beyond Their Years

Following the screening, our student panel took to the stage – and they did not disappoint. With honesty, humour and moving vulnerability, they answered questions with eloquence. Their openness created space for the audience to reflect and share as well, turning the room into a space of genuine connection.

A massive thank you to all the students who organised, hosted and led the day.
Your creativity, courage and commitment remind us exactly why B-HUGs exists – to nurture futures rooted in pride, excellence and community.

-Joy
